What is Coaching and Why Do I Need It?

Transitioning to Coaching

Hey Crew. A quick thanks to all of you who attended my first live webinar co-hosted by Stephanie of Creating Within and Sheila of SheilaJoyPhotography. That was so much fun! For those of you following Sheila or myself, you’ll notice we are both in a transition from blogging to coaching.

Can I just say, coaching rocks and we are both super excited about our new journeys!

Honestly though, coaching isn’t new to either one of us. She has been doing it for some time now behind the scenes and working one-to-one with others for a while.

I have been learning and teaching leadership skills for nearly a decade, have extensive training in dealing with difficult people-conflict resolution, and a pretty polished degree in business finance. (I’ll save my college story for another day but it’s awesome how many diverse classes I have mastered.)

Coaching and Why You Need It

What is new for this journey is taking it online. At least for me. My plan was to start coaching after about two years of blogging. I wanted to really get my content out there, inspire others, and have a super solid email list before starting a coaching biz online. In February I hit my one year mark for blogging! Crazy how time flies.

So I’m jumping the gun a little, but I’m just so flippin excited!

I have taught in seminars and spoken in group retreats, so I’m thinking I’m going to love the one-to-one connection from my coaching/mentoring program! And I’m aiming to coach you how to create a life you truly, truly love a little more every day.

To create a life and legacy you admire and adore! A life with more rewards and fewer regrets.

Great Coaches Continually Seek Coaching

There are good coaches, and then there are great coaches. Coaches for business, life, relationships, leadership, wellness, fitness, etc. This list is quite extensive.

Here’s what I KNOW to be ABSOLUTE TRUTH.

Good coaches teach and help people. Great coaches teach and transform, helping people help themselves. Great coaches hire their own coaches and continuously learn and grow so they can continually pay it forward.

If you want a really amazing, miracle-filled life, I suggest ongoing coaching intermittently throughout your life.

When athletes train for the Olympics, they don’t go it alone. They often have conditioning coaches, nutrition coaches, and mindset coaches.

A guy wants to start investing and building a retirement so he heads to a financial advisors office.

When a corporation wants to push their newest ideas over the top they hire leadership coaches, marketing coaches, and public speaking coaches.

Coaching Strengthens Your Skills

When a blogger is struggling to make money with their online biz they can beat their head against a wall, or hire someone skilled to perform a blog audit.

The audit provides the blogger with steps and strategies to improve all areas of their blog so they have the best chance possible to start earning an income. And peeps,….there is a whole lot of moolah to be made on the internet. If you have an idea, PURSUE IT.

Back to the point, a great coach doesn’t just solve simple problems for you. They provide you with a skillset and arm you with solutions that you can put in your arsenal for future use. A hand up is better than a handout. And yes you’ll likely start seeing amazing results during coaching if you are doing the homework and using the tools your being taught!

Athletes get stronger, businesses land contracts, people lose weight, relationships get healthy, etc.

Why Would I Need Coaching More Than Once?

First of all, our life is not static. It is always changing and diversifying in different ways.

You may hire a nutrition coach one year to get your eating habits on track. They teach you all kinds of useful info that is super helpful. But two years later you are fighting with your teenager like crazy and can’t seem to gain common ground.

Not likely that you’ll go running to your mother-in-law’s advice. Also not likely that the nutritionist gave you a helpful set of skills for this department. But a communications coach that specializes in teens, jackpot.

Sidenote: One really great thing about online coaching is the privacy.

For the relationship, family, money, or life niches, some people simply do not feel comfortable going to a local counselor or therapist (they do serve other functions) simply because of the lack of privacy. Someone sees your car in front of the counselor’s office and you become self-conscious of others judgment. Online coaching can be a real life-changer.

However, if you suffer from chronic depression or mental illness, a licensed psychiatrist or physician should be your priority.

In business, we often hire multiple coaches for the same type of thing just to keep growing. I absolutely admire the coach I have now. She is twelve years younger than me and is pulling in six figures every year for the last three years teaching her skills.

We click.

I cannot tell you how important that is. Always try to seek a coach who resonates with you. Someone who will push you, call you on your bull, and still love all over you! That’s the ideal fit. You never want to hire someone who kisses your booty while sugarcoating your habits or behaviors that need some tuning. Nor do you want a coach who bullies you and doesn’t support your transformation.

When we are finished working together I will likely take a short break and look for another coach for a different area. The idea is to keep building my skills.

The Truth of Coaches and Coaching

Trying to do everything alone is just plain ignorant. We all need help in life at some juncture or another.

And trust me I know from experience. I was financially and emotionally responsible for myself at a very young age. I was very used to doing things for myself, and by myself. Leadership coaching changed my life. Thank you John C. Maxwell. Financial coaching changed my life.

Thank you Eric, Jessi, Brad, Robert, Kim & Tracy E, and many others I met in the last decade!

Beating your head against a wall out of stubbornness is not ideal.

If you’ve been financially strapped for years, you likely need a money mindset coach.

Struggled with your weight for years, you probably need a fitness or dietician, maybe both.

Bawl your eyes out every other night because of stress, yep there is a coach for that too.

Here’s a harsh truth: You Cannot Expect Others to Invest in You if You Will Not Invest in Yourself.

Let me be clear here. Not every investment requires a coach or money. But all of them require time. Dressing up nice for your spouse is an investment in your self-worth and relationship. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator is an investment in your well-being and health. Filling out an application for a new job because you are miserable in your current job is an investment in your sanity. Inviting a friend who is going through a rough patch out to lunch is an investment in your friendship.

[bctt tweet=”Time will always be more valuable than money, which is why so many people should hire a coach to free up some of their time!” username=””]

As a coach, my investments include hiring my own coaches to keep learning, giving time, knowledge, and skills to my clients, taking care of myself so I offer up the best I have to offer, and building honest real connections with my clients.

One-to-One Coming Soon

All this talk about coaching and you’re looking at my page going huh? You will start seeing some major changes to my site in May. My homepage will focus on my coaching services.

Rest assured, I am not quitting writing. I will keep posting under the blog tab, although no longer every Monday and Thursday. I’ll likely only publish once per week or once every ten days depending on the client ratio I am working with.

Some of you may have already noticed my schedule change the last few months. I was prepping my one-to-one programs and learning tons of technical skills so I can offer the best possible service for my clients.

I’d love to hear your feedback and questions about my transition. Hope to work with some of you soon!

xoxoDeanna
