What to Do When You Feel Like Quitting Your Business

  • by

You’ve been trying to make your mark in business. You have a good idea. Working many hours. And you feel like you’re spinning your wheels. “Should I just quit? This isn’t working. I’m so tired. Maybe this isn’t for me. Why can other people make it but I can’t?” This can be especially true for those of you attempting to create an online business.

If you are considering quitting right now, or you’ve had thoughts about quitting in the last few months, hear me out.

Why Am I Not Making Money in My Business?

So let’s say you’ve been at this a while. You are making sporadic bits of money but nothing that will pay the bills. Friend, I have been there! I was busting my butt on top of my day job and family to put together an amazing site. You feel like your stuck between a rock and a hard place. Which direction do you go?

I had read stories about women making $30k a month online and thought, heck if I could make 1/5 that I’ll be golden. (Yeah I was undervaluing myself bigtime). I can do this. These women aren’t magicians. They don’t have some special wand that I don’t. They worked smart. I can do that. They helped people. I can do that. They are crushing it. I can…….

Six months later I was barely covering my expenses. My ad income was all over the place and affiliate income just sucked. My email list was like a darn yo-yo. I had no interest in doing sponsored posts. I had spent well over $2000 on e-courses, books, webinars, training. Not to mention countless hours in the middle of the night sucking up the free stuff.

It’s so frustrating when you are putting in the time and effort to help people, only to look at your bank balance in tears at the end of each month.

You start becoming resentful of the whole thing.

What to Do When You Feel Like Quitting Your Business

The business is taking time away from your family, hobbies, self-care and the whole point was to get more of that time. To make more money, get more freedom, and help people in the process.

Like how hard can it be? There are over 7 billion people on the planet. You only need a handful to keep your business afloat right? I had coached in real life before so online should be a breeze right?

First things first. Let’s talk a bit about your business goals. You can make money from ads and affiliate marketing. It’s simply going to take longer to make a quality of living wage. Ads and affiliate links rely heavily on your ability to build traffic. You have to pump out quality content on the regular for a while to earn trust and start generating visits and clicks. This takes time. Like as in 18-24 months of pure consistency in most cases.

If you need to be making money sooner than that, you can create ebooks, webinars, masterclasses, services, or coaching packages. But what if you are doing these things and still aren’t making money?

Do You Have  Money Blocks?

Some people admit and address their self-limiting beliefs and blocks. Others aren’t aware they have them but are open to the process. And many, way too many are in denial that they have any.

Be honest.

Have you ever used any of the following phrases?

  • I would never charge that much, that’s just greedy.
  • I’m always broke.
  • I need to keep my prices low so I can attract more customers.
  • I need to have a sale so I can attract more customers.
  • It’s not about what I charge, I’m just trying to help people.
  • I can’t afford to invest in that right now, it’s not the right time for me financially
  • Well, it worked for her but it just doesn’t work for me.
  • Money doesn’t grow on trees.
  • I can’t afford to take a vacation.
  • How am I going to cover that expense?

I have been guilty of five of these in the past.

Having money blocks will keep you in the poorhouse or living payday to payday. Most people learn money blocks between the ages of 2-7. YES. THAT EARLY. We overhear our parents argue about money or we go without something because they can’t afford it. Or worse, they spend foolishly on material items with no real value.

We see them balancing their accounts before they can take us somewhere. They complain about the costs of something that seems like a big deal but should be trivial. Our teachers early on, explain how “hard” we have to work at our grades to go to college and get a good job. Lavish lifestyles seem like something we only see on television. Money blocks are real and they are everywhere.

One of my wealthiest friends growing up had some major blocks of her own. She truly believed that you could only be wealthy if you put in 70-80 work weeks because that is how her parents earned their money. She “hated” money and didn’t care if she was ever wealthy. What she actually hated was the time her parents took from her because of their own money blocks.

Take Inventory of What You Want

You have to think of money more like energy. It’s an exchange process.

And guess what, you don’t have to exchange all of your time to get more money. You know the saying “work smarter, not harder”? While partially true, it should say:

“Work Aligned, Stay True North, and the Money Will Come”

Most people will spend 1/3 of their life sleeping or eating, 1/3 working, and 1/3 on the rest. Chores, errands, sports, church, family, television, hobbies, exercise, self-care, vacations, etc.

Not really fair that work eats up 1/3 and all the important stuff has to share the remainder.

In my coaching programs, I challenge this lie with a whole heart. It can be the other way around and it should!

One place I tell most people to start is by identifying what it is EXACTLY what they want. Describe your ideal day in vivid details. Tell me why you want to work 3 hours a day. Explain how you feel when you get to spend a full hour just talking and laughing with your spouse. Describe to me the oasis that is your backyard. Tell me all about the lavish birthday party you threw for your little princess as she turned 5 years old. Chat me up about your personal trainer and maid that stops by once a week to help you out.

What do you want? Like really want?

Stop making excuses or giving so-called reasons why you can’t or shouldn’t want what you truly want. Allow yourself to want the things that really matter to your heart. You will not lead a successful business or life for that matter if you go around trying to justify denying yourself the situations and position you truly want to be in.

What Can You Do to Add To Your Business Today?

So once you identify what you want….freedom, security, the ability to be generous, stability, choices, time, etc….you can really get to work.

Once you identify what you want and WHY you want it, nothing should be able to stop you from reaching a higher potential.

Yes, you’ll hit roadblocks. You’ll have a few failures along the way.

But when your why is true and your what’s are identified on a Deep Level, you can barrel through those temporary setbacks like never before. This is that “flow state of mind” you hear guys like Tony Robbins talking about.

It’s the timeframe when things start clicking. Synchronicities and “coincidences” happen all the time. You are manifesting and creating opportunities like a real genie.

You know those lucky people that seem to have everything fall into place? They are on this wave. Remember that scene from Finding Nemo when Crush the turtle is explaining to Nemo’s dad about riding the wave? Just going with the current to get where they need to be faster. And once he got over his fear and swam into it, he had fun!!!

This can be you.

You don’t have to toil away from the time you walk in the door until you drag your booty to bed.

Choose one thing that will add value to your business today and do it. Just one thing.

Maybe you finish up a sales page. Perhaps you draft a stellar email for your list. Or you reach out to that one blogger you’d love to interview for your podcast.

And tomorrow. Choose one thing.

Of course, there will be days that you bang out nine things on your list without breaking a sweat. This is what happens when you hit the flow state. But until then, just keep choosing one thing.

If you put 30 mins a day toward any obstacle or problem for a total of six months, it is 99.3% chance it will be solved by then. At the very least it will most certainly not be the same. So show up, don’t give up, and keep choosing one thing until you find the wave!
